I rise early in the morning, just before sunrise and grab my duffel having laid out what I would need the night before.

I leave the building and no one noticed my departure, or if they did they avoided me. I assume that more likely. Fear is beneficial for my lifestyle.

I head back into the alley, wherein the manhole cover is, setting down my bag and moving the cover.

I grab my duffel and climb down, laying it on the ground. I climb back up and slide it back.

I move back down, picking up my duffel again, and head into the sewer, looking for just the right spot. Perhaps a recessed pipe that is unnoticeable.

Exactly the spot I was looking for, now to begin my work. I screw in eyescrews from the opposite walk to my own on the wall, about 6 inches in height. I tie on a piece of darkened wire and run it through and up the wall on my side. The tripwire finished, I now just need to load the trap. I wire in the loaded sawed off shotgun next to the pipe. It is old and dull, no one will ever notice it until it is too late. I tie off the string to both triggers. Whatever trips this will definitely be in for a surprise.

I have placed it so if anyone walks on either side of the tunnel the blasts will hit at chest level. Hopefully I can uncover the identity of these syndicate agents that are stalking me. I grab my duffel and head back upstairs secured they will not escape me again...

On his way back from hunting in the slums, something about the route reminds him of the traps he and Quinn happened across not far from here, so he changes course to investigate. Standing on one of the walkways to either side of the flowing sludge, he begins using his cane as a probe, poking and sweeping it around in the turgid, swirling muck where he was struck before.

(2008-08-06 20:54:54 Hyde rolls 7 dice to Wits+Survival 1,6,8,8,2, 6,3 (3 successes)

There are a couple of false alarms, when his cane struck a bottle or a discarded and ruined firearm, likely tossed into a storm-drain after a shooting. Eventually he hits paydirt, there is a muffled clink as another beartrap slams shut on the end of his cane. Giving it a tug confirms that this one too is attached to a chain. Plunging a hand into the filthy waters, he latches onto the device and plucks it from its moorings.

He then carefully inspects his cane for damage and grins his sickly, apish grin when he finds that the cane actually damaged the trap. Prying the contraption off, he decides to hang on to this one, take it back to Grey relatively unharmed and see if he can work some of his wizardry on it, there can't be too many places around that sell such things, so Hyde surmises that if he can find out who does, he'll just keep coming back and trashing the damn things, stake out the places where they are bought, and beat the piss out of anyone who leaves with an armload of the infernal contrivances.

Thinking himself rather clever, he travels on toward the Hovel, swinging the beartrap like a pocket-watch and whistling 'Zip-a-dee-doo-dah' as he struts along with his cane.

(2008-08-06 21:36:14 Hyde rolls 7 dice to Wits+Survival (Diff 9) 3,4,3,2,8, 7,7 (failure)

He doesn't even have time to flinch before the wire he stepped on unleashes both barrels of the hidden shotgun into his gut.

(2008-08-06 21:42:25 Shotgun rolls 5 dice to Both barrels attack 6,9,1,9,3 (2 successes)[5 dice for attack to equal the # of suxx on setting the trap, re-roll 10's because the trap is specialized]

(2008-08-06 21:56:18 Shotgun rolls 11 dice to Both barrels damage 4,3,2,3,2, 6,4,2,1,3, 3 (failure)

Aside from deafening him in one hear for quite some time, Hyde manages to come out the other side of the black-powder smoke unscathed. His greatcoat, however, did not fare so well. There is a soccer-ball sized hole in the exterior cloth that hides the half-inch thick steel breastplate beneath it, or used to hide it.

All of the pellets having been harmlessly deflected, Hyde stops whistling and twirling the trap, looks down, and brushes the debris from his midsection before looking around and finally realizing what just happened.

The steel trinket in his right hand clangs to the stone walkway, forgotten for the moment as he peers between the pipes lining the wall to his left. Reaching up, Hyde tears the sawed-off shotgun from the brackets holding it in place. He looks it over briefly, making certain it is not the same gun he gave to Mister Grey not so long ago.

Satisfied it is not the same model, the rage hits him once more. Bellowing some unintelligible curse he drops the rifle and slams his fist into the nearby wall, leaving a cracked indentation the size of a man's head in the stonework. "I think I've had just about enough of this malarkey." he mutters quietly, suddenly calming down.

Gathering up the shotgun and the beartrap, he sets off for the Hovel once more, albeit more slowly, in search of Mister Grey.

Nature and History do not agree with our conceptions of good and bad; they define good as that which survives, and bad as that which goes under; and the universe has no prejudice in favor of Christ as against Genghis Khan. -Will and Ariel Durant
