THE HOUSE
Fifteen minutes or so from Downtown, in a very nice looking area, you will come across Kara’s domain, her Home away from the Opera House.
The houses are scattered, each beautiful with lovely yards. Kara’s, the only one set upon the small hill-like rise, though not the largest, seems to be the one that may draw you near for it is the high wrought iron fence encircling her property that will catch your eye. Each curve of iron has been crafted in the shape of a rose, stem, leaves, thorns and all, encircled by dramatic swirls and tree shaped designs.
A guard is always by the door, sitting in a small booth-like place, his face is usually concealed by the darkness of the tiny room, yet he looks big and built...and mean. His twin guards the rest of the place, but you’ll hardly ever see him. Listen quietly though when you get into the House...something like rats skitter on the roof...snipers.
If you were to enter the gates and drive down the cobble-stone road leading to the House you will see a cluster of trees, like a small forest, spreading out before you then finally the branches part and you come to the front.
Tall white rose bushes decorate the front yard, crawl up white pillars and hide the back yard of the house. There are 2 cars usually parked outside; an old-school white Ford Shelby is parked next to an attractive shiny, silver Masarati; on the hood of the Masarati, like an over-grown hood ornament, you will usually see a large male wolf laying on the hood. Pull him off and you will always see him return to the hood, as if an invisible thread connects them.
Enter the House and you will see a large living room, that's got three ceiling to floor windows and a glass door, which all face the back yard; what’s on the other side of the glass is hidden by the blinds. The room is gorgeous…immaculate, there's a lot of sugar-white in the room; a white couch and two-seater, thick, white rug, white walls, there's even a white baby grand piano off to the side. The coffee table is glass, and if you look very closely, you'll see that the wall has got some sort of ivory decorations on it. Stand in front of it and you will notice it's been painted like a Japanese garden, flowers bloom, Koi fish swim lazily in ponds, there are even trees, people and birds. The only splash of colour is the deep red of the curtains and a couple red and pink vases holding multi-coloured flowers.
There’s an arrangement of knick-knacks here and there; ranging from small copper wolves, a snow globe with a waltzing couple in it, a handful of bottles filled with something-or-another that looks like dull glitter or powder, a wooden clock that runs backwards, a glass carafe filled with something resembling foggy water in it, and a few other things that make this House look like a Home.
There are 5 picture frames on the walls. Nearest to you is a simple painting with green stemmed pink flowers, by it is a black unicorn standing amidst emerald trees. The wall furthest from you holds a painting of an octopus, which was defiantly created by a child and a large painting of an androgynies angel with its winged ripped off, bleeding from the wounds on its back, looming over an aquarium filled with a hideous looking small octopus in it. But the only real-person picture in the house is a painting of a regal looking, long-haired Japanese man, which hangs over the piano. Close to that is a cd player with a vast array of cds, from Opera to Japanese Rock. There is no TV.
If you were to walk behind the large aquarium you will see a second, quite small, beige, sitting area, which bares an elaborate stone fireplace, a bookcase made of cherry-wood, a brown and gold two seater and an off-white bear-skin rug on the floor. There are also a few plants there. This is probably the coziest part of the House.
Turn with your back to the aquarium, and you'd see an arch leading to a kitchen. It's a pretty, yet simple kitchen of pale beige appliances, the walls are decorated with tiny pink flowered wallpaper on a white background. There's a round beige, wooden table in the middle and 6 matching chairs around it. Hovering over it is a pretty, smoky-white, circular light fixture the size of a balloon with spider thin, pink flowers painted on it. The appliances are standard stuff; the only odd thing might be an almost 2 meter tall second 'fridge' that is usually locked. There's a window with frilly pink, lace curtains over the sink, looking into the front yard and to the rose bushes.
Move out of the kitchen back into the living room and turn to your left, there you will see a flight of stairs leading upstairs. If you were to follow your nose up you’d come across four bedrooms and two bathrooms, one bathroom is basic, white and red tiles with white bathtub, toilet and sink. There’s an oval mirror with three light bulbs decorating it, there are also a handful of rubber duckies in all sorts of colours in a wicker basket next to the tub and some pretty smelling toiletries.
But where that bathroom is simple the other one is not...white and honey toned swirled marble floor, ivory claw-foot tub with gold tips, a Jacuzzi for two set on a slightly raised floor, and all that good stuff. There are toiletries that smell of vanilla or roses set near the tub, brushes, a few bottles of perfume and other items are on a shelf over the sink. The sink is honey toned yet there is no mirror save a small hand-held one. There are no lights in this bathroom, but there are hundreds of candles placed carefully here and there. But the best part is the huge window, which takes up most of the wall that the jacuzzi’s been placed by…look outside and your eyes will fall upon the back yard. It’s one of the only public rooms, whose window overlooks the back yard that sometimes has the blinds raised.
Make your way to the bedrooms and this is what you will meet. One of the bedrooms is Kara's, the door is closed so you wouldn't be able to look inside, but if you are invited in this is what you would see. The walls are caramel and the cream carpet is ridiculously thick. The four poster Victorian bed is made of dark red-wood and topped with sheer drapes of baby pink, rasperry and demon red. Her cover is raspberry as are the pillows, dotted with cream and pink designs. A small antique drawer sits next to the bed, atop it a Victorian style lamp and a small silver jewelry box. Across the room is a taller, matching, drawer next to the closet. Upon this drawer you will find shoe box after shoe box, photographs pouring out of them, her mortal life in some of the boxes, her undead one in the others. Under them is a scrapbook filled with newspaper and magazine clippings. There is a pink settee sitting by the only Bay window of the House, the raspberry drapes are held to the side with red ribbons and one may over-look the back yard. An old plushy blue octopus toy rests at the foot of the settee.
The next 2 bedrooms are locked as well. If you’re sleeping over you may get one of the rooms. Open the door and look inside; The room is pretty....pretty weird. The walls are white, the carpet is orange and there's a huge white bed in the shape of a swan in it. There is one wall to ceiling window with thick forest green velvet curtains. The ceiling is painted light blue and the other bits of furniture, bed-side table, closet, drawer, are white. There's a table lamp in the shape of a frog prince sitting on a lily-pad, that too is green.
The other room she claims to belong to Vin, though it’s doubtful you will ever meet Vin or ever see the inside of that room.
The last one is painted in a cute pale-blue, it's got a bed in the shape of a race-car in it, some pictures of cartoon animals and a toy box. The window is shut by white blinds and prettied with blue curtains that have got Sponge Bob characters splattered all over them. The room looks immaculate, like no one's ever touched it. Look to the side and you'll see a pile of unopened gifts collecting dust next to a bookshelf full of dvds and video cassettes. A small tv and vhs/dvd player sit by it on a simple white table. There’s a single light bulb hanging from the wall, it’s the only source of light and it has been smashed.
Look up...will you? Of course you will. Notice the trap door? It's there. There’s a ladder for it, but it’s one of those electric ones that you need to use the remote control on for it to slide down, that remote is almost always with Kara. If you find a way to crawl up you'll find a large, wooden attic with a triangular roof. There you’ll find random items for target practice against one of the walls. A series of guns, from old cowboy-style pistols to sniper rifles are set up on hooks on one wall.
There's a white mother-of-pearl divider, with colourful Koi fish painted on both sides, dividing half of the room with the more ¬normal¬ half. The other side has got an easel set up on a stand, a bunch of paints and brushes on the floor and splatters of paint upon a large white sheet that's been placed on the floor to collect the droplets.
Against the opposite wall of the 'Art section' is a mattress with purple covers and a few purple pillows, which is resting upon a large, black sheep-skin rug, on the mattress is what looks like a photo album or sketch book.
There's a single window by the easel which looks out to the back of the House, it's the only window you can always see though to the back yard.
THE BACK YARD
The back yard is unlike most you may have seen. The grass is an almost emerald green and it surrounded by huge trees, which hide the fence. There’s a small white gazebo off to the left and splattered here and there are tall white marble statutes, there are 5 in all and 4 are lovely.
There’s a copy of Cupid and Psyche and the Birth of Venus, there’s also a Pegasus with its wings out-stretched and a scantily clothed male angel, his arms wrapped around himself, looking down at you with an innocent smile.
The last one, though the most realistic-looking, is also the one that may make you wish you could just look away from. On her knees, atop a block of dirty-looking stone is a marble woman, her outfit shows some form of regalness though her hair looks messy and her eyes hollow, she is clutching a dagger, which has entered her heart, her head tossed back, face in agony. The droplets of blood have been pained in crimson and pool by her knees, straining her dress with gorey hues. Encircling this statue is a perfect circle of dark red roses. There you will also see another of her pets, a large black talking Maya bird.
Further on down there is a decent sized pool filled with water. Feel the need to swim? Drown yourself? Just dive on in….come on the water’s fine, there’s nothing in there that would bite, except your hostess…honest.
